Motorists Can Do Their Part to Aid Snow Removal

With a winter storm dropping upwards of a foot of snow across sections north and northeast Iowa Monday through Tuesday, snow removal is challenging for road crews.

Pete Hjelmstad with the Mason City District office of the Iowa DOT says motorists can help the process by giving the snowplows some space.

Drivers can also help by making themselves more visible to road crews and fellow motorists by turning on your headlights.

The DOT’s Craig Bargfrede is also alerting drivers to reduced visibility of blowing and drifting expected from post-snowfall winds that could reach upwards of 40 mph.

If the snowstorm is bad enough, you can also help snow plows clear roads by staying off the roads completely.

Hjelmstad advises checking road conditions before you travel at www.511ia.org and on the 511ia app on your mobile device.
