City, County Governments Wrestle with Hiring, Wages

City and County governments are working to put together budgets for the 2024-25 fiscal year amidst shrinking revenues.
Human Resources specialist Mike Galloway told the Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors Monday (01.08) that changes in property taxes at the State level challenge the budget process.
Galloway noted that many municipalities are struggling to fill positions.Â
Recruiting and retaining employees isn’t easy in the current financial climate, which Galloway says is evidenced by the “all over the map†salary recommendations for elected officials by compensation boards.
Last month, the Chickasaw County Compensation Board proposed a 9% increase for elected officials including attorney, auditor, treasurer, recorder and sheriff. They also suggest a 3.2% cost-of-living pay bump for Supervisors, who have vowed they would not take a pay raise, continuing a trend in recent years.
Galloway says local governments will also be challenged in the near future as to what services they can continue to provide its citizens.
