Training, Building Walk-Throughs Part of Prepping for School Intruder Situation

It was a week ago Thursday (01.11) that a sixth-grade student was killed by gunfire at Perry High School before the 17-year-old shooter took his own life.
(**Update: Perry High School principal Dan Marburger has died from his injuries 10 days after he was shot while protecting students during a school shooting on January 4th.)
School districts and law enforcement work in concert to prepare for such scenarios. Chickasaw County Sheriff Ryan Shawver says their training includes scoping out New Hampton school buildings.Â
In advance of the Perry shootings, as well as with the soft lockdown two months ago at Charles City High School and Middle School, the perpetrators utilized social media to publicize their threats.
Shawver says their training also focuses on what happens outside the school.
In addition to working closely with New Hampton Police, Shawver says they also join forces with the Bremer County Sheriff’s Office to conduct “run-fight†drills in schools with students and staff.
He adds that it’s unfortunate such drills have to take place, but students and staff must be prepared, just like they would with tornado and fire drills.
