Summit Picks Up Poet Commitments for Carbon Capture Pipeline

About three months after Navigator CO2 Ventures pulled the plug on its Heartland Greenway carbon capture pipeline, several of its former partner ethanol plants in north and northeast Iowa are teaming up with Summit Carbon Solutions.

POET Bioprocessing announced Monday (01.29) they are connecting to the world’s largest carbon capture and storage project, headed up by Summit.  12 POET facilities in Iowa and five facilities in South Dakota will be incorporated into the Summit project.

Jeff Broin, POET Founder and CEO, said, “This is a tremendous opportunity to bring value to farmers, bioethanol producers, and rural communities and counties in participating states, and I believe it will unleash even more opportunities for ag and bioprocessing in the future.”

POET plants in South Dakota will be included in the upcoming application in that state, while separate applications will be filed for the plants in Iowa, which include Shell Rock, Fairbank, Iowa Falls, and Hanlontown. They, along with the Valero Renewables ethanol plant west of Charles City, were to be part of the Navigator pipeline before the company pulled its permit application with the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) in October.

While Navigator canceled its pipeline project, Summit continues waiting for possible permit approval from the IUB for its Midwest Carbon Express pipeline, which currently calls for a branch to start with the Homeland Energy Solutions ethanol plant between Lawler and New Hampton. It would then be built west through Chickasaw, Floyd, and Cerro Gordo counties among others.
