Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa 2024 Wraps

This was Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa, with Friday’s emphasis on flood safety.

The most common advice for flooding is “turn around don’t drown” if you’re driving and come upon a flooded roadway.

Floyd County Emergency Management Director Jason Webster warns that flood water can be very deceiving.

Webster also encourages being prepared for severe weather by getting signed up with Alert Iowa, which can be customized for watches and warnings by your location.

Mike Kurz is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in La Crosse adds that you can also get alot of severe weather information from their website, www.weather.gov/lacrosse

Kurz says you can also access radar to track current weather systems and graphical outlooks on future weather.
