Charles City P&Z Meets to Discuss Thriving Community Rezoning

Last August, Charles City was named a  “Thriving Community, ” opening the door to $1 million in Affordable Housing tax credits to one select developer.

Mayor Dean Andrews says projects being proposed are considered Chapter 42 residential housing.

One developer has proposed building apartments on the north side of town along either side of North Grand Avenue, raising concerns about how those neighborhoods might change socio-economically.

Andrews says the need for more apartments has been expressed by realtors and employers in Charles City.

To develop the proposed apartments along North Grand, as well as a possible apartment just southwest of Floyd County Medical Center, both areas would need to be rezoned for residential housing.

That is expected to be discussed in a Planning and Zoning meeting at 5 pm Thursday (04.04)night. However, Andrews says any decisions on rezoning won’t come until after a developer has been awarded the $1 million in Affordable Housing Tax Credits, expected sometime in June.
