Charles City Man Sentenced for Assaulting Pregnant Victim

A Charles City man has been sentenced to eight months behind bars for assaulting a pregnant woman.

Last October, Charles City Police arrested 36-year-old Melvin Williams after he allegedly assaulted the victim who was about eight weeks pregnant. The criminal complaint indicates Williams choked the woman, pushed her, caused her head to strike a cabinet, and she fell to the floor. He also bit and scratched her.

Williams was originally charged with domestic abuse assault of a pregnant person while impeding flow of air/blood and domestic abuse assault of a pregnant person while displaying or using an offensive weapon, both Class D felonies. 

In March, Williams agreed to a plea deal to be convicted on two reduced counts of aggravated misdemeanor assaults. On Friday (04.05), he was sentenced to 180 days in jail with all but 120 days suspended on each count, to be served consecutively. 

Court records show Williams was also convicted of assaulting another pregnant woman. in 2017.
