Sumner-Fredericksburg Names New Superintendent

A north Iowa school district has selected its next superintendent.

Sumner-Fredericksburg has named Kevin Seney to replace current Superintendent Fred Matlage, who is retiring June 30th. Seney has served as principal of Grinnell-Newburg High School since 2008 and will officially take over at Sumner-Fredericksburg July 1st.

Other finalists for the post included Micah Gearhart, the PK-8th grade principal in the North Fayette Valley School District, and Josh Moser, 7-12th grade principal at Martensdale-St. Mary’s.

Seney comes to Sumner-Fredericksburg from the same school district as one of the finalists for another north Iowa superintendent position. Steven Barber is currently Superintendent at Grinnell-Newburg and will interview with the Charles City School District on Monday (05.06).

Other finalists interviewing Monday in Charles City  will be Gary Benda of Hills, who previously served as shared Superintendent for Starmont and West Central schools for two years;  and Brian Burnight, who was Director of Elementary Education in Sioux City Community School District until 2023.

The Charles City School Board hopes to make a decision by Tuesday.

Whoever is hired will replace Anne Lundquist, who announced in February that she would retire June 30th. However, last month, she was placed on administrative leave as the district investigates allegations about behavior that, according to School Board President David Schrodt, “raises questions about Dr. Lundquist’s fitness for duty and ability to serve as an employee of the Charles City Community School District.”

Central Rivers AEA has assigned Karl Kurt to serve as temporary superintendent to assist the school district in the interim.
