Northeast Iowa Man Facing Attempted Murder Charge After Allegedly Shooting Father
A northeast Iowa man is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly shooting his father last month.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32-year-old Ashton Root of Winthrop on Friday (05.10) after he was accused of shooting his father in an April 27 incident in Winthrop. Root faces a charge of attempted murder, a Class B felony.
When the victim was brought into the ER at Buchanan County Health Center in Independence with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and arm, hospital staff contacted law enforcement. The incident put the facility on a precautionary lockdown, since authorities could not account for all involved parties.
Based on information obtained at the hospital, Sheriff’s Deputies and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation executed a search warrant at a home in Winthrop. The investigation determined that the shooting was the result of a two-day argument between Root and his father, who has since been released from the hospital.
Root is in custody at the Buchanan County Jail.
