Highway 218 Bridge in Floyd Opened to Two Lanes to Help Motorists Rerouted by Charles City Flood

With flooding forcing the closure of both the Main Street Bridge and Brantingham/Highway 18 Bridge in Charles City, motorists are being challenged to get from the north side of town to the south side and vice versa.
Currently, the most efficient path is going through Floyd, where the Highway 218 bridge was only one lane in alternating fashion due to work being done on the bridge. That was until about 7 am this morning according to the DOT’s Pete Hjelmstad.
Hjelmstad says the Brantingham Bridge in Charles City could be re-opened Monday (06.24) afternoon, without having to be inspected first.
City Administrator Steve Diers says the Main Street Bridge won’t re-open until water levels recede to allow for a closer look at potential damages caused by flood debris slamming into the structure.
In general, officials caution motorists to not drive into flooded roadways. Turn around, don’t drown.
