Charles City Speed Cameras Get Put in Park, Will Go Dark

On March 11th, four traffic enforcement cameras were activated in Charles City in an effort to crack down on speeding within City limits. Less than three months later, the City is being forced to pull the plug on the devices.
That’s City Administrator Steve Diers, who says the City had hoped to “grandfathered†in for use of the speed cameras before new rules regulating their use go into effect July 1st.
Many believed that Charles City would automatically be banned from using the speed cameras because the population is under 20,000. That’s not the case, but Diers says it still appears to be a longshot to get an exemption.
Diers notes that one thing that has happened with the implementation of the devices, drivers in Charles City have slowed down, which was the City’s main goal.Â
But for the near future, the speed cameras in Charles City will be “put in park†and will “go dark†on Monday.Â
