Illinois Man Killed After Crashing SUV in Northeast Iowa

An Illinois man is dead after crashing his SUV in Northeast Iowa.
The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office says they received a 911 call at about 1 pm Saturday (06.29) afternoon about a vehicle running off the road and disappearing into the ditch on Highway 9 near 260th Avenue. At the scene, about five miles west of Decorah, a deputy determined that a wrecked Toyota SUV, which could not be seen from the roadway, had entered the north ditch, traveled through thick vegetation, and rolled over, landing on its roof.Â
The deputy also observed a male who had been ejected from the vehicle, deceased with a fatal injury to his head. The victim has been identified as 78-year-old Rodney Carlson of Hanover Park, Illinois.
WCSO says a witness, who helped authorities locate Carlson’s vehicle, stated Carlson had passed his vehicle at a high rate of speed and then started swerving in front of him before the SUV left the roadway and disappeared into the ditch.
Family members confirmed that Carlson was traveling alone while driving from Decorah to Cresco when he crashed.
