BREAKING: Former Charles City Resident Sentenced to Life in Prison for Murdering Nashua Man

A former Charles City resident, convicted of killing a Nashua man over 11-and-a-half years ago, has been sentenced to life in prison.

On May 23rd, a Chickasaw County jury deliberated just over an hour before finding 51-year-old Randy Patrie guilty of first-degree murder in the death of 70-year-old Carl Gallmeyer of Nashua, on or about September 25, 2012.

Tuesday (07.02), Judge Richard Stochl sentenced Patrie to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Prior to sentencing, Chickasaw County Attorney David Laudner says five victim impact statements were presented to the Court.

Patrie was identified as a prime suspect in Gallmeyer’s death, but before local officials could pursue their case, he was sentenced in 2014 to life in federal prison on felony firearms charges and for being a career criminal. In 2018, Patrie was resentenced to 20 years in federal prison, which enabled Chickasaw County to resume efforts to prosecute and convict him.

Laudner says that brings where Patrie will serve his sentence into question.

For now, Patrie returns to the Fayette County Jail in West Union, where he has resided since being returned to Iowa for prosecution in January 2022.

He will have 30 days to appeal his sentencing.
