Setting Off Fireworks in Iowa Legal, Comes with Restrictions

Despite an increase in complaints, setting off consumer-grade fireworks is allowed in Iowa, generally, under state law.

Chickasaw County Sheriff Ryan Shawver says some restrictions apply.

Shawver also notes that firework ordinances can vary from city to city.

The firework ordinance in New Hampton reflects the state code, but shooting off fireworks is not allowed within the City limits of Charles City.

Shawver also cautions against drinking alcohol when lighting up your fireworks, which could lead to disastrous results.

Contact officials for details on the local fireworks ordinance in your community.
