Gas Leak in Charles City Friday Caused by Work for Main Street Rehab

Emergency personnel responded to a natural gas leak on the north side of Charles City Friday (07.19) afternoon that appeared to be caused by work as part of the Main Street Rehab project.
Officials were alerted to the gas leak at about 1:30 pm Friday near the intersection of North Main Street and North Grand Avenue. A Charles City Fire Department Facebook post says, “While digging, the crews struck a line which resulted in a hole in the (gas) line. Crews monitored the area with four gas meters and worked with CCPD (Charles City Police Department) to block off the area to prevent vehicles and pedestrians from entering.”
Floyd County Emergency Management Agency was also on scene and MidAmerican Energy came in to shut off the gas main. AMR Ambulance was also present as an added precaution.
EMA Director Jason Webster says authorities monitored the situation closely in case any evacuations were needed while alerting those in the immediate vicinity, including Pure Prairie Poultry, to be on “standby.”
Those precautions also included blocking off North Grand Avenue from 10th to 13th street and an “all clear” was declared after about an hour.
