GoFundMe Account for 10-Year-Old Hospitalized After Drowning in North Iowa Pool

A 10-year-old girl remains hospitalized after a drowning incident at a North Iowa swimming pool earlier this week.

Northwood Fire and Volunteer EMS crews were called to the Northwood Swimming  Pool about 1:30 pm Monday (07.29) afternoon for a reported drowning. By the time they arrived on scene, lifeguards had pulled Lyla Rafnson from the pool.

The girl was transported by Northwood Ambulance to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City. According to a GoFundMe account established by Andrew Rafnson, Lyla is recovering but in critical condition.

An update on the page Wednesday (07.31) morning indicated that medical staff woke her up briefly, she knew where she was, could comprehend what was happening and was able to move all her arms and legs. She was then put back under, but plans were to take her off the ventilator Wednesday afternoon.

The incident forced the Northwood pool to be closed the rest of Monday and all day Tuesday. The facility was back open Wednesday.

The GoFundMe account on behalf of Lyla Rafnson began with a goal of $10,000. As of 3:30 pm Wednesday, more than $10,300 had been donated.
