Floyd County Wind Turbine Ordinance Public Hearing Continues Tuesday (08.06)

After taking public comments last week for almost four hours wasn’t enough time, the Floyd County Board of Supervisors Tuesday (08.06) night will resume the public hearing on proposed changes to the ordinance regulating the construction of wind turbines in Floyd County.
Over 100 people attended and about two dozen expressed views for and against amendments by the Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission during what turned out to be Session One of the public hearing hosted by the Supervisors in the Floyd County Fairgrounds’ Youth Enrichment Center on July 29th. After starting at 6:30 pm that night, Supervisors decided by around 10:30 pm that more time was needed to allow the public comments to continue, which will start at 6:30 pm Tuesday night in the same location.
P&Z Chair Dean Tjaden noted last week that Supervisors have a tough task of balancing the ordinance on behalf of those for and against, when the County could see about $4 million in tax revenue that wind farms proposed by Invenergy and NextEra might generate.
Supervisor Chair Mark Kuhn read a petition signed by over 430 people that asked for adjustments to the adjustments of the ordinance.
Landowner and attorney Doug Lindemann said the issue was not for Supervisors to decide with local ordinances.
After the public comments are concluded, Supervisors could then approve the first reading of the ordinance as presented, make changes, or send it back to P&Z for additional work. The ordinance must be passed on three public readings before any changes can be adopted.
