EF1 Tornado In Northeast Iowa Last Week Part of Record Year for Twisters in Iowa
The National Weather Service in La Crosse has confirmed that an EF1 tornado touched down in northeast Iowa last Monday (08.05) night.
The tornado, north of Waukon near Hanover, packed an estimated peak wind of 105 mph. It was 50 yards wide and was on the ground for about ten minutes, traveling almost four miles.
The tornado damaged mainly trees along its path, with one home and several outbuildings/vehicles were damaged as well. There were also several reports of trees downed across roads in the Decorah area.
It’s one of the latest twisters in what State climatologist Justin Glisan says has been a new record for most tornadoes in a single year.
Glisan adds that tornadoes can strike during any month of the year, even during the wintertime. In 2021, Iowa had a record 63 tornadoes in a single day — in December. That was during the state’s second derecho in as many years, and that December outbreak set another record for most EF-2 tornadoes in one day — at 21.
Tornadoes were confirmed December 15, 2021 in or near Rudd, Marble Rock (2), North Washington, Elma, Maple Leaf, Schley, Cresco, Greene, Rockwell, Hansell, Sheffield, Meservey.
