Suicidal man with firearm causes lockdown of WinnMed in Decorah

The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday morning received a call from the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office advising of a suicidal male subject with a firearm in the WinnMed parking lot in Decorah.

Deputies were able to make contact with the subject by phone and negotiation attempts were made. The subject fled in his truck and eluded from Winneshiek County Law Enforcement. During the pursuit, several attempts were made by the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office and Decorah Police Department to stop the vehicle. Ultimately, the deputies and officers were able to box the vehicle in on the overpass on Highway 52 near Madison Road and safely bring the vehicle to a stop.

The subject was taken into custody without incident and the firearms in the vehicle were recovered. The subject was then taken by law enforcement to WinnMed for further evaluation.
The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office and Decorah Police Department have several charges pending from this incident.

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City, which basically means he’s been corn‑fed and radio‑bred since day one. As a kid, he was always caught singing along to the radio — and while he’ll tell you he’s great at karaoke, let’s just say the audience’s ears often file a noise complaint. When he’s not busy butchering ‘80s power ballads, Chris enjoys starting overly ambitious home projects that rarely make it past the “great idea” stage. He lives in Charles City with his endlessly patient wife Vicki and their kids, Brynlee and Jaxon, who have already perfected the art of the eye‑roll every time Dad cracks another “dad joke.”
