BREAKING: No Homecoming Parade, Football Game at Sumner-Fredericksburg

First the varsity football game was cancelled, now Homecoming Week in the Sumner-Fredericksburg School District will not feature a parade either.

According to a school Facebook post Tuesday (09.10), “Due to multiple injuries sustained over the last few weeks, Oelwein High School has made the decision to forfeit this Friday’s varsity football game against our Sumner-Fredericksburg Cougars.”

In place of the Varsity game, the school district was working on adjustments to the 9th-10th grade game. However, the school announced Thursday, “We regret to inform you that, due to uncontrollable circumstances, the Freshman football game scheduled for Friday has been canceled. This decision was not made lightly, as we have worked diligently to find a way to make the game happen. We understand how much our students, families, and fans, especially during Homecoming week, look forward to these events. However, the well-being and competition for our student-athletes are always our top priorities, and we believe this is the best decision under the circumstances.”

Friday, a school district Facebook post  also announced the cancellation of the Homecoming parade, “Due to unforeseen circumstances there will not be a homecoming parade today. The pep rally will be high school students only, however, adult attendance is still welcome. The pep rally will start at 1:15 in the blue gym and will be live streamed on the Hudl Fan app.

The Sumner-Fredericksburg Homecoming dance Saturday (09.14) night will go on as scheduled.

We have made the difficult decision to forfeit our upcoming varsity football game against Sumner-Fredericksburg, scheduled for this Friday, September 13, due to a number of injuries sustained over the past two weeks.
Following a hard-fought contest last week, several members of the Oelwein Huskies suffered significant injuries that have impacted the team’s ability to safely field a competitive squad. After careful consideration and consultation with coaches, medical staff, and school administration, it was determined that the safety and well-being of the student-athletes must come first.
“We are deeply disappointed to have to forfeit this game, but the health of our players is our top priority,” said Josh Ehn, Superintendent of the Oelwein Schools. “It would not be fair or prudent to either team to put our Freshmen and Sophomores on the field in a manner such as this, and we owe it to all involved to make the right decisions regarding their safety.”
The team will focus on recovery and rehabilitation, aiming to return to full strength for future matchups. Despite this setback, the Huskies remain committed to their season and look forward to getting back on the field as soon as they are able.
Oelwein High School extends its gratitude to Sumner-Fredericksburg for their understanding in this situation.
A Fresh/Soph game will be played in place of the Varsity match-up this Friday Night. Kick-off will take place at 6:00 at Sumner-Fredericksburg High School. Further updates on the team’s status and upcoming games will be provided in the coming days.
