Charles City Main Street Rehab Asphalt Work to Alter Traffic Starting Monday (09.23)

The rehabilitation of North Main Street in Charles City is ready to enter its final stages.

Biss Ries with Veenstra & Kimm, the project managers, says asphalt work is set to begin Monday (09.23), weather pending. Crews from Heartland Asphalt plan to start milling the west half of Main Street, north of the Main Street bridge.

City Administrator Steve Diers says it means a change in traffic patterns.

Charles City Police Chief Hugh Anderson says the asphalt work also requires motorists to rethink how they cross Main Street. He advises avoiding Main Street if possible, with the only cross streets open being Clark, Hulin and Lane Streets. Its recommended motorists use Lane Street when possible to access houses and businesses west of Main Street.

Ries adds that after the west lane of Main Street is complete, contractors will move operations to the east side. When this happens, two-way traffic will be shifted to the newly paved west lane.

When both the east and west lanes have been milled and paved with the base and intermediate asphalt courses, one final surface course of asphalt will be paved.

The work is expected to take two weeks to complete.
