Authorities Investigate Shooting Threat Aimed at North Iowa School

Authorities are investigating a shooting threat aimed at a North Iowa school.

The Mason City Police Department (MCPD) was contacted Friday (10.04) morning by Mason City High School officials about a social media post regarding a school shooting threat at the high school “during 2-3 periods.” The original post was from SnapChat.

Chief Jeff Brinkley said MCPD immediately contacted state and federal partners about the threat and learned that the post surfaced on Thursday (10.03)  elsewhere in North Iowa. Authorities were already aware of it and investigating the threat and determined there was no credible threat to students, staff, or the community at this time in Mason City.

Brinkley thanks local students and parents who notified MCHS school officials, “Their prompt call to MCPD allowed us to quickly follow-up on this post and gather additional information from the Fusion Center. We appreciate the working relationship that we have with the Mason City School District as we work to keep students and staff safe at school.”

Anyone with information about the social media post can contact the Mason City Police Department at 641- 421-3000.
