Not Much Work Anticipated This Week for Charles City Main Street

After all asphalt paving work on North Main Street in Charles City was completed and full pedestrian and vehicle access and parking was restored last week, little, if any, construction is anticipated this week.
Crews from Heartland Asphalt put the final layer of 1.5 inches of new asphalt on the street by last Wednesday, from the Gilbert Street intersection north to the newly configured North Main/North Grand intersection. The street was returned to full access by Thursday morning.
Bill Ries with Veenstra & Kimm, managers of the some-$2 million project, says that, beginning the week of October 21st, the contractor will begin adjusting sewer manhole castings which will require localized traffic control. During this work, access and parking will be maintained to the greatest extent possible.
Ries adds that, after the manhole adjustment work is complete, contractors will begin final clean up operations. The current plan is also to either dormant seed the disturbed turf areas in November or wait and perform seeding work in the spring.
In related work, Charles City Water and Street Superintendent Cory Spieker says permanent stop signs to control the North Main/North Grand intersection are expected to be installed this week.
