The Main Street Bridge in Charles City will get a “deep dive” into its current condition, which could determine its future.
The bridge was shut down for over two weeks this summer amid concerns of its structural integrity after the Cedar River flooded in late June, leading to huge trees and other debris slamming into it.
During Monday (10.21) night’s City Council meeting, City Administrator Steve Diers said the question over replacing it with a new bridge versus keeping features of the current bridge will be costly either way.
Councilwoman Phoebe Pittman said the City owes it to citizens to know the exact costs with an in-depth study of the bridge.
The Council approved the study of the bridge’s structure, as well as the condition of the adjacent dam and mill, for about $115,000.
