13th Street Extension, Closure in Charles City Brings Yield Sign, Concerns

While 13th Street in Charles City was recently extended west to intersect with Corporate Drive, the eastern half of the road has been closed off to through traffic.

City Administrator Steve Diers told the City Council Monday (12.02) night that closure has been met with concerns from residents who live along 13th street.

Since the issue was not on the agenda, the Council could take no action to address the matter.

The Council did approve the recommendation of City Engineer John Fallis to add traffic control signage to the 13th Street/Corporate Drive intersection, according to guidance from the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Motorist driving west on 13th Street will yield to the cross traffic on Corporate Dr.

The changes to 13th Street were set in motion when the City agreed to transfer ownership of the street, between the main building of Floyd County Medical Center (FCMC) on the north side of the road and the FCMC Clinic on the south side of the road, to the hospital. FCMC will eventually connect the hospital and a new clinic as part of their $40 million dollar expansion and remodeling project.
