North Iowa Law Enforcement “Spoofed” in Scam Calls
The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office is warning people of scam phone calls in which the scammers claim to be an employee of their office.
Sheriff David Hepperly says they’ve been made aware of several citizens of the county receiving such phone calls, with the caller telling victims they have unpaid fines, outstanding arrest warrants, or a need to appear in court to testify. Hepperly says calls are scams and an attempt to gain personal information from you, which, once obtained, could be used to defraud you.
Hepperly says Sheriff’s Office employees will not make calls of this nature.
If you do receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office telling you this type of information, you should end the call immediately and report the incident at 641-421-3000.
