City Council Seat Opening in New Hampton

There will be an opening next week on the New Hampton City Council.
Mayor Steve Geerts says At-Large Councilwoman Katie Fisher, whose full-time job is special education director in the New Hampton School District, will resign, effective this Tuesday (01.21), which follows the next regular City Council meeting Monday (01.20) night.
Geerts applauds Fisher’s work ethic
Geerts says he prefers appointing Fisher’s replacement, though citizens could petition for a special election.
If and when a replacement is appointed, any citizen’s petition to request a special election must be submitted within14 days of the appointment. A petition can also be filed within 14 days of “notification to fill a vacancy,” which City Clerk Karen Clemens says will be published in the New Hampton Tribune January 23rd.
Geerts says at least one person has expressed interest in the appointment and those interested are asked to contact Clemens at City Hall.
That appointee would then serve out the remainder of Fisher’s term, which ends December 31, 2025. He or she would have to run for election this November to retain the seat beyond the end of this year.
