Being Prepared for Winter Weather Driving Should Include Survival Kit

The winter storm from Tuesday (02.11) through early Thursday (02.13) morning is expected to provide the first widespread, significant snowfall of the season for most of the state.

If you are planning to travel in inclement winter weather Pete Hjelmstad with the Iowa DOT’s Mason City District office says you should have a winter survival kit packed in your car in the event something happens. He says that should include a charged cell phone, extra gloves, boots, stocking cap, blanket, plus granola bars or non-perishable food items if you end up being stranded for a while. The basics should also include a flashlight, jumper cables or a jump pack.

Before hitting the road, Hjelmstad urges checking road conditions first at www.511ia.org or on the 511ia app.

As those road conditions change, Hjelmstad says that DOT crews are ready to adjust with them.

Hjelmstad also cautions that the best piece of advice is, “If you don’t have to go, postpone your plans.”
