National Weather Service to Host Storm Spotter Training Tuesday (03.04) in Charles City

It may not have felt or looked like it over the past week, but it’s still officially winter.
However, Mike Kurz, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in La Crosse, says it’s not too early to be concerned with spring-like storms cropping up.
More evidence are the some-63 tornadoes spawned by the derecho that moved across Iowa on December 15, 2021, including a dozen in north central and northeast Iowa.
Yet, even in the spring, Kurz says tornado formation can surprise forecasters, like the cold air funnel cloud south of Charles City last May.
As part of that effort, the NWS is scheduled to host a Storm Spotter Training session at 6 pm Tuesday (03.04) at the Zoetis Auditorium in Charles City.
Kurz says attending the Storm Spotter Training session does not commit you to becoming a storm spotter and the free class is open to anyone interested in weather, regardless of age.
Other Storm Spotter Training sessions are also scheduled in Luana on March 13th, Waterville on April 1st, and Elma on April 2nd.
