Bond Reduction Denied, Trial Date Set for Charles City Woman Accused of Felony Child Abuse

A bond reduction request for a Charles City woman accused of violently abusing a child has been denied.
Criminal complaints filed by Charles City Police accuse 37-year-old Samantha Slaughter of physically assaulting a child in a home in the 300 block of 8th Avenue on February 13th. CCPD alleges Slaughter “did so by committing a series of acts, each of which was done deliberately and intentionally with the intent to cause serious injury to (the) minor.”
Slaughter is charged with child endangerment causing serious injury, plus willful injury causing serious injury. Both are Class C felonies, punishable by up to 10 years in prison on each count.
Monday (04.14), Slaughter entered a not guilty plea in Floyd County District Court and demanded a speedy trial, which is now set for May 13th.
A bond reduction hearing for Slaughter was also held on Monday. On Wednesday (04.16), District Judge Gregg Rosenbladt denied Slaughter’s motion and she remains held in the Floyd County Jail on $20,000 cash-only bond on each of the counts for a total bail of $40,000 in her name only.
Meanwhile, Slaughter, also known as Samantha Jones, faces more legal troubles in Winneshiek County, where she was convicted March 3rd for child endangerment and assault with bodily injury or mental illness. She received a suspended prison sentence and placed on two-years probation, but following her arrest March 24th in Floyd County, a probation revocation motion was filed in Winneshiek County and a warrant issued for her arrest.
In the Winneshiek County case, Slaughter assaulted a child under the age of 14 between February and April 2024.
