Main Street Bridge in Charles City to be Examined Further Starting This Week

The 115-year-old Main Street Bridge in Charles City is getting another inspection.
The bridge, on the National Register of Historic Places, was shut down for over two weeks last summer amid concerns the structural integrity may have been compromised when the Cedar River flooded in late June, leading to trees and other debris slamming into it.
The City had to have the structure surveyed by Anderson UnderBridge before the bridge was reopened with a 28-ton limit.
That’s City Administrator Steve Diers, who also notes last fall’s deeper dive into the bridge and nearby dam.
Scheduled to start Monday (04.28), Diers says inspection crews will take one final look at the structure’s integrity, including workers repelling down the sides to assess the facade and underside of the bridge.
Diers says findings of the final inspection are expected to be reported back to the City in July.
