Firefighters from Seven Departments Battle Weekend Fire in Charles City

Firefighters from seven departments battle a late night fire on Charles City’s southwest side over the weekend.

Charles City Fire Chief Sam Deverell says CCFD was dispatched at about 11:55 pm Saturday (06.07) on a 911 report of smoke coming from 300 Corporate Drive. CCFD crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from Custom Wood Products.

Firefighters immediately began a fire attack and mutual aid was called from several area fire departments, including Colwell, Floyd, Marble Rock, New Hampton, Nora Springs, and Rockford.

A Charles City Fire Rescue Facebook post on the fire noted that additional crews were paged “due to the size of the building and unknown materials inside the building.”  Crews were able to control the fire before it spread to other materials minimizing the size of the fire.

Close to 50 firefighters battled the blaze until around 3 am Sunday (06.08) morning, when the fire was extinguished.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no injuries reported.

Deverell said, at the time of his press release about 1:30 pm Sunday afternoon, there is no immediate danger to the public.

Also assisting at the scene were the Charles City Police Department, Floyd County Communications Center, Floyd County Search & Rescue, AMR Ambulance, Iowa State Fire Marshals Office, Cedar Falls State Radio Communications, and MidAmerican Energy.
