Through 7 PM, conditions are favorable in northeast Iowa for the development of weak, brief funnel clouds. This type of funnel cloud is harmless, but on rare occasions they can briefly touch down, producing wind gusts over 50 mph.
As evidenced by the cold air funnel that was spotted southeast of Charles City in May 2024, Mike Kurz, warning coordination meteorologist, says these types of “twisters” are hard to detect.
Kurz says spotters can be crucial to identifying these funnel clouds, so, if you see a funnel cloud, move indoors and report your sighting to the National Weather Service.
