In this Community Conversations segment, Charles City Mayor Dean Andrews joins us to preview the annual Firecracker 5K happening the morning of July 4th on the Charley Western Recreational Trail. Hear how the event supports trail repairs, what runners and walkers can expect, and why this tradition has become a favorite way to kick off Independence Day in Charles City.

The Firecracker 5K starts at 7:30 a.m. on July 4th at the Charles City High School track, with registration opening at 6:30 a.m. Runners, walkers, and families are welcome! No pre-registration required—just show up and join the fun. Proceeds benefit the upkeep and improvement of the Charley Western Trail, and participants can win age-category awards, door prizes, and even a medal for best patriotic costume. Don’t miss this festive and fitness-friendly start to your holiday, organized by Main Street Charles City.

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City, which basically means he’s been corn‑fed and radio‑bred since day one. As a kid, he was always caught singing along to the radio — and while he’ll tell you he’s great at karaoke, let’s just say the audience’s ears often file a noise complaint. When he’s not busy butchering ‘80s power ballads, Chris enjoys starting overly ambitious home projects that rarely make it past the “great idea” stage. He lives in Charles City with his endlessly patient wife Vicki and their kids, Brynlee and Jaxon, who have already perfected the art of the eye‑roll every time Dad cracks another “dad joke.”
