More Food Means More Volunteers Needed for Charles City Mobile Food Pantry

During their first-Wednesday-of-the-month distribution of food to those in need on June 4th, the Charles City Mobile Food Pantry had their biggest turnout ever and they ran out of food.
That shortage included their regular households, plus the extra food for kids ages 4-to-18 through the Healthy Kids Iowa program, which provides an extra $40 in fruits, vegetables, dairy, grains, and proteins for each child in the qualifying household each month of June, July, and August.
Organizer Jen Burton says their supplier, Northeast Iowa Food Bank, looks to avoid that situation during Wednesday’s (07.02) distribution.
Burton says that increase in food means they’ll have three trucks of food arriving this week, which means more volunteers are needed to help ready the food to handout at the Floyd County Fairgrounds.
Burton also notes that the state, starting July 1st, requires households to fill out new eligibility forms to receive the free food, which can be done Wednesday while you’re waiting in line.
Burton says the eligibility form needs to be filled out only once and it is good through June 30, 2026.
Burton reminds those coming out for the mobile food pantry Wednesday to NOT start lining up before 3:30 pm. Distribution runs from 5 to 6 pm.
