Petition Forces Special Election for Floyd County Supervisor Seat
The date has been set for a special election for the District 2 seat on the Floyd County Board of Supervisors.
Former District 2 Supervisor Dennis Keifer passed away in June.
On July 7th, a state-coded committee of County Auditor Morrigan Montagne, County Recorder Amy Assink, and County Treasurer Jessie Holm appointed Josh Neupert to succeed Keifer. Other candidates who applied included Doug Linderman, David Bahe, Aaron Hobart, and former county treasurer, Frank Rottinghaus.
Despite Neupert’s appointment, any eligible voter in District 2 could file a petition for a special election. On Thursday, July 17, Robert Carey submitted a petition to Montagne with 320 signatures, 63 more than required.
During Tuesday’s (07.21) Supervisors meeting, Montagne informed the Board that the petition has been verified and officially accepted.
The earliest a special election could be scheduled requires giving at least 32 days notice of the election, which as things stood on Tuesday, Montagne would be challenging.
Montagne also cited time needed to print ballots, her being gone five days for election training, and her office down one staff member as playing roles to suggesting September 23rd as the earliest date possible for a special election.
Gloria Carr, who held the auditor’s position for two decades before becoming a supervisor, says Montagne and the County are navigating some new territory.
Before voting on the special election date, Neupert paused the process.
Neupert did abstain, with both Carr and Board Chair Boyd Campbell approving the special election date of September 23rd on a 2-0 vote.
