Waukon Police Warn of Scam Alleging Recipient is a “Person of Interest” in Investigation
Northeast Iowa authorities are alerting the public to a scam in which the culprits send text messages implicating the recipient as a “person of interest” in an ongoing investigation.
Waukon Police say the text message being sent is not legitimate and that “no part of this message is consistent with any correspondence our department would make. “
Waukon Police posted an image of the text message being circulated on the department Facebook page, which includes: Waukon Police Dept – Digital Investigations Unit. This number has been linked to a report involving potential fraud and digital impersonation. You are not currently being charged, but are listed as a person of interest in an active case.”
The text message also asks the recipient to confirm their address to verify their identity. The scammers also warn the target of their scam, “Do not delete any recent messages of call logs. An officer may contact you or stop by your residence within 72 hours. Further details will be provided at that time.”
Waukon Police caution: If you receive this message or anything similar, please delete it immediately. Also, don’t respond to it.
