Third Candidate Enters Race for Floyd County Supervisor Special Election

There are now officially three candidates for next month’s special election to fill the District 2 seat on the Floyd County Board of Supervisors.

Former District 2 Supervisor Dennis Keifer passed away in June. In July, a state code-mandated committee of County Auditor Morrigan Montagne, County Recorder Amy Assink, and County Treasurer Jessie Holm appointed Josh Neupert to succeed Keifer. Other candidates who applied included Doug Linderman, David Bahe, Aaron Hobert and former county treasurer Frank Rottinghaus.

Despite Neupert’s appointment, any eligible voter in District 2 could file a petition for a special election, which such a petition submitted on July 17th with 320 signatures from within the district, 63 more than was required.

That special election is now set for September 23rd. Only voters in District 2 will be able to vote. District 2 includes all of Charles City, north of the Cedar River, plus the part of St. Charles Township that is north of the city.

Floyd County Republicans have named Neupert their nominee, with Floyd County Democrats selecting Rottinghaus as their party rep. Montagne says both Neupert and Rottinghaus officially filed their nomination papers with the auditor’s office Tuesday (08.12).

Candidates not affiliated with a political party can still get on the ballot with at least 50 signatures from eligible voters within District 2.

On Wednesday (08.13), Montagne said Hobert submitted his nomination papers. The deadline for additional candidates to file is 5 pm August 29th.

Until the election, Neupert will continue to serve as the appointed supervisor and whoever is elected after the results are certified will serve out the remainder of Keifer’s term, which runs until the end of 2026.

Montagne estimates the cost of holding a special election between $8,700 and $10,700.
