Cost of Charles City Waste Services to Go Up

The cost of residential waste services in Charles City will go up next month.
The City’s agreement with Jendro Sanitation/LJP Waste Solutions for waste services allows Jendro to request a rate increase once per year.
During their meeting Wednesday (09.03) night, the City Council considered Jendro’s latest request for a 2.62% CPI-adjusted rate increase. The rate is based on the average monthly change in CPI from August 2024 to July 2025.
City Clerk Brittney Lentz gave a run down of the price changes based on that percentage increase.
City Councilman Phil Knighten asked if the City has ever approved a decrease in the rate if that CPI went down.
City Attorney Brad Sloter offered that it’s unlikely based on their contract with Jendro, signed in 2017.
The Council approved the residential rate increases, which will go into effect in October and will be reflected in November’s utility bills.
Jendro’s rates are going up similarly with other municipalities that contract with the company for waste services.
