Floyd Co. Supervisor Candidates Share Views on County Ambulance Service in Second Candidate Forum

For the second time in three nights, candidates vying for the District 2 seat on the Floyd County Board of Supervisors participated in a candidate forum in advance of next Tuesday’s (09.23) special election.

Among issues candidates were asked to address at the Charles City Community Center Thursday (09.18) night, was the future of ambulance service in the county. Ideally, the County and the City of Charles City would have their own public EMS operation.  However, an EMS Tax Levy to help fund an ambulance twice failed to garner the 60% supermajority YES vote to pass.

Non-party candidate Aaron Hobert says the measure deserves another look.

Doug Lindaman, also running as an independent, agrees the EMS Tax Levy as well as other funding sources should be explored.

Floyd County Republican candidate Josh Neupert, a Charles City firefighter and someone who previously worked for the County’s private ambulance provider AMR, says making that ambulance a public service should a priority.

The County and the City contract with AMR for ambulance service. They also subsidize the operation at a cost of about $450,000 this fiscal year. Democratic candidate Frank Rottinghaus noted that agreement is running short on time.

An EMS tax levy that failed in 2024 would have raised up to $670,000 a year for five years in support of EMS, including the four entities that supply ambulance service in the county: Nora Springs and Greene ambulances, Marble Rock First Responders and AMR Ambulance.
