Fire Prevention Week 2025, CCFD Chief Offers Safety advice on Lithium-Ion Batteries

It’s Fire Prevention Week, with this year’s spotlight is on lithium-ion battery safety with the theme “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”

Charles City Fire Chief Sam Deverell says lithium-ion batteries power more and more electronic devices.

Deverell says the batteries can become more susceptible to fire as they weaken.

He also cautions safety when recharging lithium-ion batteries.

Deverell also advises only charging the battery with the cord or base that came with the unit.

He adds that lithium-ion batteries should also be taken off the charger as soon as they are fully charged.

Fire Prevention Week officially ends Saturday (10.11), but the Charles City Fire Department will wrap up the week with their annual Pancake Breakfast this Sunday (10.12) from 8 am to noon at the fire station.
