Traffic Crash Leads to Felony Drug Charges for Northeast Woman, Man
A weekend traffic crash has led to drug felony charges against a northeast Iowa man and woman.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) responded to a two-vehicle wreck in Hawkeye shortly after 10:30 am Saturday (10.11) morning. FCSO says their investigation determined that a Chevy Traverse driven by 37-year-old Samantha Corsbie of Garnavillo collided with a Dodge Ram truck driven by 52-year-old Regina Larson of Oelwein.
FCSO says Larson over-steered into Corsbie’s lane, struck her vehicle and continued to drive through the crash causing more damage to both vehicles. They also allege that Larson was on her cellphone during the wreck.
During the collision investigation, a deputy noticed an aroma of illegal substances coming from Larson’s truck. That led to a search of the vehicle and the discovery of almost 20 grams of methamphetamine.
Larson was arrested and charged with a controlled substance violation, a Class B felony; plus possession of a controlled substance – 2nd offense – meth, an aggravated misdemeanor, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.
FCSO says their investigation also led to the execution of a search warrant at a residence in the 900 block of 2nd Avenue Northeast in Oelwein Saturday night around 11 pm, in conjunction with Oelwein Police. Inside, two occupants allegedly attempted to conceal themselves from law enforcement, with one found hiding behind a fake wall and under a stairwell, the second was found hiding in the attic and insulation.
More illegal substances were seized, with 34-year-old Michael Bushaw of Oelwein arrested for a controlled substance violation, a Class C felony; possession of a controlled substance – third or subsequent offense, a Class D felony; and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also faces charges of harboring a runaway and interference with official acts and also had a Buchanan County warrant for his arrest.
A 16-year-old male juvenile was also located at the residence who was reported missing and had a valid warrant for his arrest. The teen will receive additional charges that are being referred to the Juvenile Court.
