Existing Mississippi River Bridge at Lansing Closes Permanently Monday (10.20)

The existing bridge over the Mississippi River from Lansing, Iowa, into Crawford County, Wisconsin closed permanently at 7 am Monday (10.20) morning.
Pete Hjelmstad with the Iowa DOT’s Mason City District office says the process of removing the bridge will begin right away, though complete demolition of the bridge won’t occur until December or January.
The Iowa and Wisconsin DOTs will implement a car ferry to transport vehicles across the Mississippi, but it could still be a couple of weeks away.
Until the car ferry is up and running, the nearest highway bridge to cross the Mississippi is approximately 30 miles south at U.S. Highway 18, connecting Marquette, Iowa, to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.
The existing Iowa 9/WIS 82 Mississippi River bridge is being shutdown for safety reasons as construction on a new Black Hawk Bridge nearby continues.
The new bridge is projected to open in spring of 2027.
