Existing Mississippi River Bridge at Lansing Could Come Down Next Month

The existing Black Hawk Bridge over the Mississippi River from Lansing, Iowa, into Wisconsin could be gone completely in a month.

The Iowa and Wisconsin DOTs closed the bridge permanently October 20th out of safety for construction of the new bridge nearby.

Pete Hjelmstad with the Iowa DOT’s Mason City office says crews have been dismantling the old bridge.

Meanwhile, the new bridge continues to take shape.

Until the new bridge is completed, the DOTs offer a free ferry service to shuttle vehicles and people back and forth between Iowa and Wisconsin. Hjelmstad says they’re averaging about 365 vehicles a week.

In other bridge updates, Hjelmstad says they’re still on target to open the new Iowa Highway 3 bridge over the Cedar River in Waverly late Wednesday (12.26) afternoon.
