Winter Storm Threatens Thanksgiving Weekend Travel Across North Iowa

A widespread winter storm is expected to move into north Iowa late Friday and last through Saturday night, bringing accumulating snow and hazardous travel during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Forecasters say confidence is increasing that snow will develop across the region, with travel becoming more difficult once snowfall begins.
Snow is expected to start late Friday, become steadier Friday night, and continue through Saturday night. The Weather Service in La Crosse says most areas are likely to pick up 3 to 6 inches of snow, with some locations possibly exceeding 9 inches depending on the storm’s final track. Forecasters also warn that the long duration of this storm could keep roads slick for much of the weekend, even on well-traveled highways.
The most dangerous travel is expected from Friday night through Saturday, when roads could quickly become snow-covered and visibility may drop at times. Even after the snow ends late Saturday night, travel problems could linger into Sunday as road crews work to clear highways and cold temperatures slow melting.
With many drivers expected on the roads for post-Thanksgiving travel, officials urge motorists to use extra caution. Drivers are urged to slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, avoid using cruise control on slick roads, and keep headlights on during snowfall. Officials also recommend carrying a winter emergency kit with blankets, a flashlight, phone charger, food, water, and extra clothing in case of delays or slide-offs.
Motorists are also encouraged to winterize their vehicles ahead of the storm, including checking tire tread and air pressure, testing the battery, topping off windshield washer fluid rated for freezing temperatures, and making sure heaters and defrosters are working properly. Keeping the fuel tank at least half full is also recommended in case of unexpected delays.
Forecasters stress that while exact snowfall totals may still change as the weekend approaches, this storm is expected to create widespread winter driving conditions across north Iowa. Anyone with weekend travel plans should keep a close eye on the forecast and be prepared for rough travel conditions.
