Iowa 9/WIS 82 Mississippi River Bridge is No More

The original Black Hawk Bridge over the Mississippi River from Lansing into Wisconsin is no more.

That’s the bridge being imploded Friday (12.19) morning by the Iowa and Wisconsin DOTs, about two hours later than anticipated. The implosion of the old bridge was targeted between 9 and 9:30 am Friday, but detonation was delayed until shortly before 11:30 am.

Removal of the main section of the old bridge was needed to allow construction of the new crossing to proceed safely with a planned opening in 2027.

Pete Hjelmstad with the Mason City District office of the Iowa DOT says it’s the biggest project he’s ever been part of.

The old bridge was built almost 100 years ago.

In advance of the implosion, the free car ferry service between Iowa and Wisconsin was suspended at 6 pm Thursday (12.18) night and resumed at 6 am Monday (12.22) morning;
