Weekend Apartment Fire in Charles City Displaces Residents

There were no injuries, but residents were displaced after a weekend house fire in Charles City caused by a space heater.
Just before 5 pm Sunday (01.25), fire departments from Charles City, Colwell, and Floyd were dispatched to 906 Gilbert Street, where firefighters were able to quickly knock the fire down. Additional firefighters completed overhaul to extinguish fire hidden in the walls, floor, and ceiling.
CCFD Chief Sam Deverell notes that the structure was an apartment building and the fire was contained to a single unit. The fire displaced the residents of the apartment and the Floyd County Emergency Management Agency coordinated temporary lodging for them.
Deverell says the fire was caused by a space heater. He reminds users to keep all space heaters at least three feet away from combustible material and follow manufacturer instructions.
Charles City Police, Floyd County Search & Rescue, and AMR Ambulance also assisted at the scene.
