Nashua Officials Set Public Meeting for Residents’ Input on Law Enforcement Service
The City of Nashua has set a public meeting for citizen input on the future of law enforcement service in town.
The City discontinued its police department in 2019 and currently contracts the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office to provide 1,750 hours of law presence in Nashua at $75 per hour for a total cost of just over $131,000 for the current fiscal year ending June 30th. The County has proposed an increase of 2% for the new fiscal year starting July 1st, which would bring the total cost to almost $134,000.
Thus, Mayor Shelly Weiss says the City is exploring the cost of law enforcement and wants residents within city limits to help determine how much police protection the city needs against how much of the City’s 2026-2027 fiscal year budget should be allocated to the cost of that service.
The City has also been providing information through the City Facebook page on how the law enforcement in town is set up, as well as options on costs for “drive through” service.
In an effort to share more details and to gather more input from Nashua residents on the future of law enforcement in the city, a public meeting is set for 7 pm Thursday, February 26, at the Gateway to Northeast Iowa Welcome Center in Nashua
Comments/questions can also be directed to Nashua City Hall.
