Northeast Iowa Teen Dies After Being Struck by Train

A northeast Iowa 16-year-old, killed after he was struck by a train, has been identified.

Waverly Police say they were notified shortly after 7 am Tuesday (03.03) of an accident involving a pedestrian and a train near Waverly Health Center and Waverly-Shell Rock High School. When officers arrived, they confirmed the teen had died at the scene.

Earlier Tuesday morning, Bremer County Emergency Management reported a train was blocking access through parts of Waverly, with the Iowa DOT saying Iowa Highway 3 was closed between US Highway 218 and 4th Street SW, due to emergency vehicles.

Waverly-Shell Rock Superintendent David R. Hill has identified the deceased teen as Danny Kruger.

In a statement to the school district, Hill said, “Our hearts are with Danny’s family and friends as they navigate this unimaginable grief. The district’s primary focus right now is caring for our students and staff. In coordination with the Central Rivers AEA Crisis Team and our own dedicated counselors, we are providing the space and resources necessary for our school community to process this loss together. The community is also working with the family to provide them with every possible support during this difficult time.”

Grace Baptist Church of Waverly has started a GoFundMe for the family.

The incident remains under investigation by Waverly Police and CN Railway Police.
