Charles City VFW Post Commander Denny Hull and American Legion Post Commander Harold Kelleher III joined us to discuss several upcoming events honoring veterans and supporting local veteran organizations ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

The groups are preparing for the annual Memorial Day service at the Charles City VFW on Monday at 11 a.m. The ceremony will include remarks from local officials, music from the Charles City band, prayer, flag presentations, and a time of remembrance honoring fallen service members. A meal and fellowship will follow the service inside the VFW hall.

Hull and Kelleher also discussed volunteer efforts to place flags at veterans’ gravesites across several Charles City cemeteries ahead of Memorial Day, with additional help needed again following the holiday for flag pickup efforts.

The conversation also highlighted “Operation Veterans Rock,” a large fundraiser planned for Saturday, June 6th at the Charles City VFW. The event will feature a poker run, live music throughout the day, food trucks, vendors, and activities aimed at helping support the local VFW and its future growth.

Community members are encouraged to attend the Memorial Day service Monday at 11 a.m. at the Charles City VFW and support upcoming veterans events, including Operation Veterans Rock on June 6th. Follow the Charles City VFW Facebook page for updates, volunteer opportunities, and event details.

Chris Berg

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City, which basically means he’s been corn‑fed and radio‑bred since day one. As a kid, he was always caught singing along to the radio — and while he’ll tell you he’s great at karaoke, let’s just say the audience’s ears often file a noise complaint. When he’s not busy butchering ‘80s power ballads, Chris enjoys starting overly ambitious home projects that rarely make it past the “great idea” stage. He lives in Charles City with his endlessly patient wife Vicki and their kids, Brynlee and Jaxon, who have already perfected the art of the eye‑roll every time Dad cracks another “dad joke.”
